Stakeholders discuss concrete’s contribution to Europe’s economy

On 30 June 2015, The Concrete Initiative gathered together national cement & concrete associations, economists and other relevant stakeholders to discuss methods for analyzing the contribution of the sector to Europe’s economy. The aim of this debate was to gain an initial insight into the work which will be undertaken by Le BIPE, on behalf of The Concrete Initiative.

Given the EU’s focus on growth and jobs, with an emphasis placed on investments in infrastructure, this study will provide an opportunity to assess in detail the economic contribution of concrete to the sustainability agenda.  Existing studies have already demonstrated that for every €1 spent on construction, €3 are generated elsewhere in the economy.  Today, cement & concrete are produced locally across Europe, and this study will thus aim to demonstrate how this Europe-based sector provides added value to the wider European economy. During the debate, Le BIPE presented the methodology and data sources which will be used for the this purpose. It will include official Eurostat data, complemented with data available at national level.  It will look at the direct, indirect and induced impact of the sector, as well as the catalytic impacts which take into account any externalities.  Part of the work will also be dedicated to highlighting how concrete responds to societal needs in terms of buildings and infrastructure.

The results of the study will be published on 19 November 2015, as part of our first ever Concrete Dialogue annual event. Entitled “Citizens at the Heart of the Sustainably-built Environment”, this round table will be held in Brussels at the Square meeting centre.  It will bring together policy makers and key actors involved in economic, social and environmental impacts of sustainable construction.  For more information about the event, and to already book your seat at the table, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots.
